He mentioned that some coverage of the Homeland War appeared on British television, but not extensively. Meanwhile, Teun from the Netherlands revealed that his primary interest in visiting Croatia lay in its nightlife and alcohol, rather than its history. His lack of awareness reflected a broader trend among younger travelers who often rely on social media for information about their destinations. In contrast, several tourists demonstrated a more informed perspective. Daniel and Nisrine from Morocco acknowledged that they had researched Croatia before their trip, highlighting a growing trend of digital learning. They noted that while school curricula touched on the war, students often lacked context regarding its proximity in time. “We learned about the war in school, but we didn’t realize it was so recent,” they explained, adding that online resources filled in the gaps. Ivica Petrušić, a long-time resident of the United States, observed that Croatia remains largely unknown outside of its association with football. He argued that few Americans could name the capital city, suggesting that cultural recognition remains limited. Older tourists, meanwhile, carried vivid memories of the conflicts that shaped Croatia’s modern identity. Camille again emphasized the collective trauma and fear felt during the 1990s, recalling how French media covered the events extensively. She described the public mood as one of anxiety and solidarity, akin to today’s responses to ongoing conflicts. Younger generations, on the other hand, tend to view contemporary Croatia through a different lens, one focused on beaches, culture, and leisure.
