Cupra celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades since its debut as a standalone automotive brand. The company was originally known as Seat, with the first Cupra model, the Ibiza 2.0 GTI 16V, introduced in 1996. This model carried the name “Cupra,” derived from the phrase “cup racing.” For many years, Cupra remained synonymous with sportier versions of Seat vehicles until 2018, when it became fully independent. Today, the brand offers eight models, one of which stands out historically: the Formentor, introduced in 2020 as the brand’s first completely independent vehicle. The Cupra Formentor has become one of the most attractive SUVs on the market. It underwent a redesign that transformed it into one of the standout models within its class, medium-sized sports SUVs. These vehicles often offer hybrid powertrain options, and the Formentor is no exception. With both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, it provides a powerful driving experience. The combination of high performance and efficiency makes it appealing to drivers who enjoy spirited driving while still benefiting from modern technology. The Formentor's specifications include a 1.5-liter gasoline engine combined with an electric motor, delivering up to 272 horsepower. It features a six-speed automatic transmission, enabling quick acceleration, reaching 100 kilometers per hour in just 7.2 seconds, and a top speed of 220 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption figures range from 1.8 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway to 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers in city conditions. The vehicle measures 4.42 meters in length and offers a cargo capacity of 345 liters, making it suitable for everyday use. One of the Formentor’s notable features is its striking color options, particularly the vibrant “strawberry” shade. The VZ trim adds sporty elements such as aerodynamic body kits and enhanced suspension. The interior includes comfortable yet sporty seating, contributing to the overall driving experience. Drivers have praised the responsive handling and the balance between power and efficiency, especially when using the electric motor alone. The car’s ability to travel long distances on electricity alone, up to nearly 100 kilometers, has been a highlight for many users. However, the Formentor does have one drawback. Its cargo space is relatively limited compared to other models in its category. While the trunk size is not entirely inadequate, it falls short for families requiring additional storage. Users with four passengers have noted that the lack of space can create challenges during longer trips or when carrying larger items. This limitation becomes more apparent when comparing the Formentor to standard SUVs without hybrid systems, which typically offer significantly more cargo capacity. When considering the Formentor, potential buyers should ask themselves what their primary use case will be. If the vehicle is intended for family transportation, alternative models might be more appropriate. However, for individuals who prioritize performance, enjoy driving, and have access to home charging facilities, the Formentor remains a compelling choice. Its blend of sportiness, efficiency, and modern technology makes it a unique offering in the SUV segment. Interestingly, Cupra continues Seat’s tradition of naming models after Spanish geographical terms, though these names are less well-known than others. The Formentor, for instance, refers to a small island and peninsula near Majorca. Other models include Tavascan, a small electric SUV located in the Pyrenees, and Raval, a compact electric car based in Barcelona. The brand also includes Terramar, a rugged SUV near Barcelona, and a few other models that reflect the diverse landscapes and cultures of Spain.
