The Mexican Navy’s Secretariat (Semar) has officially canceled the tsunami warning for the Pacific coast following a series of earthquakes near Chiapas, according to official reports. The alert was initially issued after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck 135 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas. The National Protection Coordination (CNPC) confirmed no damage or injuries were reported, with zero casualties recorded. The seismic activity began early Tuesday morning, with the National Seismological Center reporting a main shock at 8:48 AM local time, located at coordinates 14.59 latitude and -93.15 longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. This was followed by two additional quakes measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale in Huixtla and another of magnitude 6.1 in Mapastepec, all within the state of Chiapas. By 11:00 AM, the number of aftershocks had reached 60, with the largest being a 6.5 magnitude tremor. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo took to social media shortly after the initial quake, stating that emergency protocols had been activated and advising citizens to avoid coastal areas due to the potential risk of a tsunami. Her message emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines issued by authorities. The recommendation was echoed by Semar, which urged residents not to approach beaches for the next six hours. In response to the situation, Semar, led by Raymundo Pérez Morales, stated that the decision to lift the tsunami alert was based on analysis of data and observations of sea levels along the Pacific coastline and near the epicenter. Authorities noted that there were no significant changes detected in the water level that would warrant continued caution. However, they reiterated their commitment to monitoring conditions continuously and providing timely updates to the public. The government maintained close coordination during the crisis, with President Sheinbaum engaging directly with governors of Chiapas and Tabasco. According to a statement released by the CNPC, under the leadership of Laura Velázquez Alzúa, no serious damage or injuries were reported. A meeting between the president and Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar confirmed this assessment, reinforcing that the region remained unaffected by the seismic events. Governor Ramírez Aguilar also addressed the public through a statement, noting that while the area experienced frequent aftershocks, there were no reports of significant harm. He encouraged residents to remain indoors and advised them to stay away from the shorelines due to warnings of strong currents. Local authorities continue to communicate regularly with protection units to ensure prompt information dissemination should new developments arise. As of 12:36 PM, the CNPC reported a “zero casualty” status, indicating that neither property nor persons suffered major injuries. The ongoing monitoring efforts have ensured that the population remains informed and safe.
