Salman Rushdie, the British-American author of Indian descent, recently warned during a ceremony in London that freedom of expression around the world is once again under serious threat. Rushdie emphasized that despite living in America, a nation built on the First Amendment, he had not anticipated the extent to which governments might attack freedom of speech. He pointed out that attacks on journalists, comedians, writers, artists, and intellectuals due to their differing views reveal how authorities perceive freedom of expression. While acknowledging the ongoing struggle, he also noted the presence of strong resistance against these threats. For instance, many books are banned in libraries, but numerous legal actions are taken against such bans, often resulting in successful outcomes.

The 79-year-old writer highlighted that the world is currently going through a difficult period. He mentioned that his country of origin, India, is also experiencing significant pressure on freedom of expression. Rushdie admitted that he had believed they had already won the battle for free speech, but recent developments have shown otherwise. He stated that they had only briefly secured this right and must now prepare for a new fight.

Rushdie has faced death threats since the publication of his novel "The Satanic Verses" in 1988. The book was banned in several countries, and at the time, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, declared it blasphemous and issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie's assassination. In 2022, Rushdie suffered multiple knife wounds during a public appearance in New York. As a result of the attack, he lost vision in one eye and sustained permanent damage to one hand.

Despite the challenges, Rushdie expressed satisfaction with his recovery, noting that nearly four years have passed since the incident, and he has recovered as much as possible. He added that his recovery did not slow him down, stating that he published three books in the last three years. Currently, he is working on a new book, though it is still in its early stages, and he believes it is too soon to talk about it publicly.

A recipient of the Booker Prize, Rushdie has authored a total of 23 books. He is the 14th recipient of the Liberatum Cultural Honour, an award given for artistic achievements and contributions to intercultural understanding. Previous recipients include Zaha Hadid and Francis Ford Coppola.
