Allan Grimson, a former Royal Navy petty officer, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting four men and a 14-year-old boy, marking a continuation of a pattern of abuse that began with the murders of two young sailors. The conviction came during a trial at Winchester Crown Court, where Grimson, now 66, was sentenced to serve the rest of his life behind bars. His crimes spanned several years, beginning with the brutal killings of Nicholas Wright and Sion Jenkins in the 1990s and extending through a series of sexual assaults on male victims. Grimson was initially jailed for life in 2001 for the murders of Nicholas Wright, 18, from Leicester, and Sion Jenkins, 20, from Newbury. Both men were killed by Grimson using a baseball bat after rejecting his sexual advances. Their bodies were later discovered on separate occasions, each exactly a year apart, in the 1990s. The court heard that Grimson had lured both men to his flat in Portsmouth, Hampshire, under false pretenses, before carrying out the attacks. He had previously admitted to police that he believed killing a victim would help him avoid prosecution for sexual offenses. Following these murders, Grimson continued his predatory behavior, targeting young men he encountered while working as an instructor at the Royal Navy Firefighting School in Horsea Island, Portsmouth. Between February 1994 and November 1999, he sexually assaulted three other young men in the Navy and a 14-year-old boy. Two of the victims had reportedly been considered for potential murder by Grimson due to their rejection of his advances. The court learned that all the assaults occurred in the same flat where the two earlier murders took place, reinforcing the continuity of his criminal conduct. Grimson’s modus operandi included luring his victims to his residence under the guise of friendship and mentorship, leveraging his position of authority within the Royal Navy. He often cited his belief that violence was necessary to protect himself from legal repercussions for his sexual misconduct. In a statement made to police in 1999, he claimed that one of his alleged victims was fortunate to survive because his friend was present in the flat, suggesting he might have taken matters further. This mindset was echoed in his remarks to authorities, where he stated, “If you're going to rape somebody, to get away with it, kill it. And that's the only way you can do that.” During the trial, prosecutors highlighted Grimson’s role as a respected instructor within the Royal Navy, noting that his position granted him considerable influence over young recruits. John Price KC, representing the prosecution, described Grimson as a man in his late 30s during the relevant period, who had served in the Navy since 1978. He was characterized as physically imposing and well-regarded among his peers, yet his actions revealed a disturbing lack of empathy and control over those under his care. Grimson had initially denied the charges, asserting that his trial was a tactic to prevent his release on parole. However, this defense was dismissed, and he was ultimately found guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault and rape. His emotional response during the verdict was minimal, with Grimson appearing composed despite the gravity of his convictions.
