A sudden pipe leak on Bukit Timah Road disrupted the water supply for 17 homes in a private estate for several hours on August 22. The Public Utilities Board (PUB), Singapore's national water agency, confirmed the incident and stated that repairs had since been completed, restoring normal water flow to all affected units by 2 p.m. the same day. The leak occurred along King’s Road, near the Bukit Timah area, and was detected by PUB at approximately 5 a.m. on August 22. In response, the agency dispatched a service crew to isolate the affected section of the water main for necessary repairs. To ensure safety and allow for uninterrupted work, a portion of King’s Road was temporarily closed during the operation. Residents were informed of the disruption through official channels, and PUB arranged for a water wagon to deliver temporary supplies to the affected households. A video shared with Shin Min Daily News by a local resident captured the scene of the leak, showing a powerful jet of water erupting from the ground, forming a visible pool on the road surface. According to PUB, the cause of the leak is currently under investigation. This incident adds to a series of similar occurrences reported in Singapore throughout 2026. Earlier this year, a pipe leak in Yishun caused widespread flooding in May, while another incident in Ang Mo Kio in January resulted in water overflowing into a nearby SPC petrol station. In addition, a burst pipe in Pek Kio in June disrupted water supply for over seven hours, affecting multiple households. Similarly, in January, a burst sewage pipe in a Boon Keng HDB block left 29 households unable to use their toilets for extended periods. Another instance saw about 25 shops in Yishun’s Chong Pang neighborhood impacted due to an underground pipe leak that led to localized flooding. These incidents highlight the recurring challenges faced by PUB in maintaining the integrity of Singapore’s aging infrastructure. While the agency has taken measures such as deploying water wagons and isolating affected areas, the frequency of these disruptions raises concerns among residents regarding the reliability of the city-state’s water distribution system. The recent leak in Bukit Timah Road serves as a reminder of the need for continuous monitoring and maintenance of critical infrastructure.
