In contrast, weapons, such as antlers and tusks, are subject to more stable selection pressures, as they are primarily used in contests between males. This dynamic results in slower evolutionary changes for weapons compared to ornaments. The researchers built upon prior work by scientists like Erin McCullough, Christine Miller, and Doug Emlen, who proposed that the evolutionary trajectories of ornaments and weapons might diverge significantly. Their earlier paper suggested that the Fisher process, a positive feedback loop between female mating preferences and male ornamentation, operates differently for weapons. As a result, weapons are expected to evolve more slowly than ornaments, a hypothesis that has yet to be fully tested until now. To test this theory, the team created a quantitative-genetic model that simulated the evolution of both ornaments and weapons. They applied this model to real-world data from ten animal groups, including primates and insects. For example, they analyzed variations in primate canine length and the eye span of stalk-eyed flies. These comparisons revealed patterns consistent with the model’s predictions: ornaments showed greater sensitivity to shifts in female preferences, leading to faster evolutionary responses. The findings suggest that the interplay between male traits and female preferences plays a central role in shaping the evolution of ornaments. When female preferences change, even slightly, it can trigger rapid adjustments in male ornaments, allowing for continuous refinement of these traits. This coevolutionary relationship means that ornaments and preferences influence one another, potentially accelerating the pace of change in ornamental features. In contrast, the evolution of weapons appears to be less responsive to fluctuations in female preferences. Instead, it is primarily influenced by male-male competition, where the effectiveness of a weapon in winning fights determines its prevalence in future generations. This distinction highlights the varying degrees of influence that different forms of sexual selection exert on the evolution of male traits. As the researchers continue to refine their models and expand their dataset, further insights into the mechanisms driving evolutionary change will emerge. Understanding these differences not only deepens our knowledge of animal behavior but also provides valuable context for studying human cultural and social evolution, where similar dynamics may play a role in shaping aesthetic and behavioral norms.
