His performances caught the attention of major European clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund. However, instead of signing a professional contract with Porto or moving to one of these elite clubs, an unexpected turn of events unfolded. Varela's name became linked with the Croatian fourth-tier club NK Dinamo Odranski Obrež, raising concerns that this might have been an attempt to circumvent FIFA’s rules on international transfers of minors. At the same time, information came to light questioning the circumstances surrounding the entire transfer, prompting FIFA to launch an investigation into possible violations of the rules protecting minor players. In February 2025, he officially joined Dinamo, making his professional debut and appearing in 25 matches for the club.
