The Spanish writer, known for his surreal style, infused his novel with absurdity and dark humor, making it a rare example of chess literature that defies conventional expectations. Although less well-known than Zweig’s work, Arrabal’s novel has gained cult status among niche audiences who appreciate its unconventional approach. The 2024 Burgtheater production, while rooted in Zweig’s original text, introduces elements of music and performance that aim to deepen the emotional resonance of the story. The directors, Strunk and Schrenk, have emphasized their desire to highlight the psychological tension between the protagonist and his interrogators, using theatrical devices to convey the claustrophobic atmosphere of the setting.
