Gašper Mauko, an ordained priest serving as a missionary among Slovenian communities abroad, has returned to his home town of Radovljica after a year-long mission in Argentina. During his recent visit, he shared insights into his work with the Slovenian diaspora in Buenos Aires and Mendoza, highlighting both the challenges and rewards of ministering to a community far from home. The event took place at the parish atrium in Radovljica, organized by the KD Sotočje and the Parish of Radovljica, drawing over a hundred attendees. Mauko’s journey began last September, marking the end of his final service in Breznica before departing for Argentina. At the airport, he reflected on a sign he saw: “Follow your heart if you wish to reach your destination.” This sentiment encapsulated his decision to move to Argentina, a country he had long known through family ties. His aunt, Tončka, who was part of the post-war migration, settled in Argentina and had six children. Over time, their family tree expanded significantly, now counting more than 100 members. Mauko himself has baptized two grandchildren of Tončka, further strengthening these familial bonds. In 2016, Mauko visited Argentina with his family, settling in Mendoza. There, he participated in the renewal of a new church, and the following year, he traveled across Argentina with the spiritual choir Oremus. It was during this time that he felt a deep connection between the love Argentinians have for their homeland and the affection they hold for their Slovenian heritage. He described how even in difficult times, the community's resilience shone through. Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, Mauko faced the challenge of learning Spanish, having only completed a 12-day course. He noted that locals spoke Castilian rather than the regional dialects he was familiar with. To aid him, sisters from the Order of Don Orione offered support, helping him learn the language quickly. Each morning, he attended mass at a convent for elderly nuns, where he was warmly welcomed and gradually gained fluency. During his talk at the parish atrium, Mauko described Argentina as a vast land spanning 2.8 million square kilometers with a population of 46 million. Compared to Slovenia, he called it “chiquitita,” a term used by Argentinians to describe something small. He contrasted the humid climate of Buenos Aires with the arid landscape of Mendoza, noting how nature’s beauty, though harsh, inspired awe. He emphasized the warmth and joy of the people, who despite historical hardships maintain a spirit of celebration and optimism. The Slovenian community in Argentina, according to Mauko, is tightly knit, preserving both their love for Slovenia and their adaptation to life in Argentina. They embrace the southern American character, freedom, simplicity, happiness, optimism, openness, and yet retain the core values of Slovenian culture: diligence, faithfulness, order, and honor. Many successful entrepreneurs, scientists, innovators, and artists belong to this community. They continue traditions such as singing Slovenian songs, celebrating national holidays, wearing traditional costumes, and respecting the Slovenian flag. In every home, there hangs an image of the Virgin Mary of Brezje, and a willow tree is planted outside. Large families remain a norm, with dishes like beef stew, roasted potatoes, and grilled meat (asado) being staples. In Mendoza, even the grapevine grows alongside the Lenta vineyard. Faith remains central, providing comfort during times of displacement and loss.
