Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of Mirae Asset Financial Group, has increased its stake in cryptocurrency exchange Korbit to over 97 percent, according to a revised regulatory filing released on Tuesday. This move comes after the company announced plans to purchase an additional 1.59 million Korbit shares for 7.89 billion won ($5.32 million). The transaction follows a decision by another corporate shareholder to divest its remaining interest in Korbit. The increase in ownership raises Mirae Asset Consulting’s stake from 92.06 percent to 97.15 percent, with the total deal value rising to 141.37 billion won from 133.48 billion won. The company cited the need to secure “future growth engines based on digital assets” as the primary motivation behind the additional investment. The acquisition is expected to be finalized this Friday following post-closing procedures such as updating the shareholder registry and restructuring Korbit’s board of directors. The acquisition process began earlier in July when the Fair Trade Commission approved Mirae Asset Consulting’s purchase of Korbit. The antitrust regulator determined that the deal would not significantly hinder competition within the relevant market. This approval marked the first instance in South Korea where an affiliate of a traditional financial institution acquired a cryptocurrency exchange. Mirae Asset Consulting, which manages the hotel and golf course operations for Mirae Asset Financial Group, has been strategically expanding its presence in the digital asset sector. The company had initially acquired a 92.06 percent stake in Korbit through a previous transaction, positioning itself as one of the major players in the Korean cryptocurrency market. With the new acquisition, Mirae Asset Consulting is poised to exert greater influence over Korbit’s strategic direction and operational decisions. Korbit, established in 2014, has grown into one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea. It offers trading services for a wide range of cryptocurrencies and has implemented several security measures to protect user funds. The exchange has faced scrutiny in the past regarding compliance with financial regulations, but it continues to operate under the oversight of South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service. The increased stake by Mirae Asset Consulting reflects broader trends in the financial industry, where traditional institutions are increasingly looking to invest in digital assets. This shift is driven by growing demand for blockchain-based solutions and the potential for long-term returns on investment in cryptocurrencies. Other major banks and financial firms have also begun exploring opportunities in the digital currency space, signaling a possible transformation in how financial services are delivered. Mirae Asset Financial Group has previously expressed interest in leveraging technology to enhance its business offerings. The group operates multiple subsidiaries across different sectors, including real estate, insurance, and asset management. Its involvement in Korbit aligns with its strategy to diversify revenue streams and capitalize on emerging markets. The completion of the acquisition is pending certain procedural steps, including the formal transfer of shares and the appointment of new board members. These actions are necessary to ensure a smooth transition and maintain regulatory compliance. Once these steps are finalized, Mirae Asset Consulting will hold a controlling interest in Korbit, allowing it to shape the company’s future initiatives and expansion plans. The transaction underscores the evolving relationship between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency industry. As more institutional investors enter the digital asset space, the landscape for cryptocurrency exchanges is likely to change significantly. Regulatory frameworks will play a crucial role in determining how these investments develop and impact the broader financial ecosystem.
