Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada García, one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels leaders, has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in a U.S. federal court in New York. The former founder of the Sinaloa Cartel accepted the maximum penalty, life imprisonment, and his sentencing is scheduled for July 20, 2026. Zambada, who was captured in 2023, requested to avoid placement in a high-security prison, but the U.S. Department of Justice cited the significant security risk he poses. Additionally, authorities seek the seizure of $15 billion in assets linked to his criminal activities. The U.S. government described him as one of the most productive and influential drug traffickers of recent decades. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons reports that approximately 12,430 Mexican citizens are currently incarcerated in federal facilities, accounting for 8.1 percent of all federal inmates. This number includes individuals detained in state and local prisons as well. Among these detainees are several high-profile figures associated with Mexico's drug trade. Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, once the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, has been serving a life sentence since 2019 at the high-security facility ADX Florence in Colorado. He was convicted of drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime, with the court ordering the confiscation of $12.6 billion in illicit gains from the cartel under his leadership alongside Zambada. Ovidio Guzmán López, known as "El Ratón," is another key figure currently held in U.S. custody. As part of the "Chapitos," a faction within the Sinaloa Cartel, he is accused of playing a central role in the distribution of fentanyl. After being extradited to the United States in 2023, Ovidio pleaded guilty in Chicago in 2025 and has since been relocated to a secret location, likely due to his cooperation with law enforcement. His case highlights the ongoing efforts of U.S. authorities to dismantle major drug networks operating from Mexico. Rafael Caro Quintero, co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, was extradited to the U.S. in 2025. He faces charges related to the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985, a crime that could potentially carry the death penalty. Currently held in New York under investigation, Caro Quintero has opted to plead not guilty. His case underscores the long-standing legal battles involving some of the most notorious figures in Mexico’s drug war. Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, known as "El Viceroy," took over leadership of the Juárez Cartel following the death of his brother Amado. The Juárez Cartel was engaged in violent conflicts with the Sinaloa Cartel for years. Captured in 2014, Carrillo Fuentes was later extradited to the U.S., where he faces charges tied to his role in the cartel. Prior to his arrest, the FBI had offered a five-million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture. Genaro García Luna, former minister of public safety in Mexico, is the highest-ranking former government official ever convicted in the U.S. He was sentenced in New York in 2023 for cocaine trafficking, organized crime, and accepting millions in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel. His conviction reflects the broader impact of corruption and complicity in Mexico’s drug-related crimes. These cases illustrate the continued collaboration between U.S. and Mexican authorities in targeting top-tier criminals. With more high-profile figures facing justice in American courts, the focus remains on dismantling the financial and operational structures of these organizations. As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications for both national and international drug policy will continue to evolve.
