Sánchez also announced additional steps to secure the border, including deploying military forces to assist local police, a move last seen following the large-scale migration wave in May 2021. In response to the crisis, Sánchez outlined specific measures aimed at reinforcing border security. These include installing floating barriers along the coastline between Morocco and the Tarajal beach in Ceuta, intended to create a physical deterrent against unauthorized crossings. He also mentioned accelerating procedures to facilitate the repatriation of undocumented migrants. “Many migrants are already leaving,” he stated, while emphasizing continued cooperation with Moroccan authorities. Sánchez attributed the sudden spike in arrivals to rumors spread by smuggling networks, fueled by a recent court ruling in Spain. According to him, these groups exploited a judicial decision that allowed certain migrants who arrived by sea to remain rather than face immediate deportation. “Our conversations with Moroccan officials indicate that the smuggling networks have disseminated a favorable interpretation of a ruling by the Supreme Court,” he explained.
