Good Food is launching its third annual Cultural Change Champion award, inviting nominations for individuals and organizations working to improve workplace safety and inclusivity in Australia's hospitality sector. The initiative, supported by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guides, aims to recognize efforts that create positive, empowering, and respectful work environments. Nominations are open until August 31, 2026, with winners to be announced at the Good Food Guide Awards in October. The award was established in 2024 following investigative reports by the publication that exposed unsafe and discriminatory practices within some prominent hospitality businesses. These included allegations of sexual assault, harassment, substance abuse, and misogynistic behavior, which placed female employees at heightened risk. Subsequent investigations uncovered further issues, such as wage theft and the exploitation of vulnerable workers. This series of revelations underscored the urgent need for cultural transformation within the industry. This year's award focuses on recognizing outstanding contributions from Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory. Eligible applicants include business owners, non-profit organizations, volunteer groups, and advocacy networks that have implemented innovative strategies to enhance workplace conditions. Initiatives can address a wide range of concerns, including but not limited to gender equality, mental health support, and fair labor practices. The program encourages submissions that promote inclusivity and respect across all levels of the hospitality workforce. One of the early recipients of the award was Jamie Bucirde, a former hospitality worker who gained national attention through her Instagram account, Not So Hospitable. Her work highlighted systemic issues within the industry and contributed to a broader conversation about workplace safety. Bucirde collaborated with the University of Melbourne to produce an academic report that helped drive meaningful change. Her efforts marked the beginning of a larger movement toward accountability and reform. Another notable recipient recognized by The Sydney Morning Herald was Women and Revolution (WAR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to dismantling gender-based barriers in the hospitality sector. WAR offers mentorship, coaching, and skill-building programs focused on public speaking and negotiation, equipping participants with tools to navigate challenging workplace dynamics. The group’s leadership includes board members from diverse backgrounds, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. Last year, the Sorry Not Sorry collective received dual recognition from both The Age and Sydney Morning Herald for its impactful work. Founded by Rachelle “Rocky” Hair and Jenna Hemsworth, along with Alex Hooker, Brittany Rowe, and Reuby Kahl, the group emerged from personal experiences of sexual harassment within the hospitality industry. By sharing their stories publicly, they triggered a significant shift in awareness and prompted regulatory action. Their actions led to an investigation by SafeWork NSW and resulted in mandatory sexual violence prevention training in pubs and clubs. The collective continues to push for legislative reforms and improved mechanisms for reporting and addressing misconduct. Applications for the Cultural Change Champion award are open to anyone who has developed or supported initiatives aimed at fostering positive workplace cultures. While individuals can submit names for consideration, businesses or organizations must ensure they are based in Australia. The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026. A panel of judges comprising editors from the Good Food Guide and experts in workplace culture will review all entries before announcing the winners at the upcoming awards ceremony.
