Loss of DNA protector gene exposes vulnerabilities in cancerous cells

Researchers discovered that the loss of the ATRX gene, which plays a role in DNA repair, leads to significant vulnerabilities in cancerous cells. Using CRISPR gene editing, scientists removed ATRX from cells and found that the absence of this gene made cells reliant on two other protein complexes, CST and 9-1-1, to manage DNA damage. Without ATRX, single-stranded DNA accumulated at critical points like telomeres and replication forks, leading to genomic instability.
