Set around a royal family burdened by a thirty-year-old secret curse, the story follows King Ju-sang’s desperate attempt to protect his youngest son from the mysterious force that regularly claims the lives of his heirs. To uncover the cause of these deaths, the king seeks the help of a spirit hunter named Gu-cheon. Meanwhile, the king's daughter, Saeng-gang, returns to court at her father’s command. She was once exiled as a child due to her ability to hear spirits. Though initially reluctant to join the search, she is driven by a personal vendetta against the killer of her mother. As their investigation progresses, the two gradually unite their strengths to combat both supernatural and human evil. The creative team behind The East Palace drew inspiration from Korean shamanistic traditions and folk beliefs, incorporating numerous mythical beings into the storyline. Viewers encounter spirits of the dead trapped in unresolved grief, vengeful ghosts filled with bitterness, and malicious entities that grow more dangerous with each murder they commit. These supernatural figures are carefully designed to align with the tone and aesthetic of the series, ensuring immediate recognition of their nature by the audience. Recurring director Choi Jung-kyu emphasized the focus on practical effects and set design, which helped create an immersive atmosphere. Filming took place in Yeoncheon, where separate sets were constructed for the physical world and the realm of spirits. Viewers learn that the current king’s mother poisoned his older brothers to secure his throne, falsely blaming the death of the palace servant on a spirit. As the plot reaches its climax, the spirit hunter Gu-cheon ventures into the spirit world to destroy the malevolent entity threatening the crown prince. Before succumbing to darkness, he successfully rescues Princess Saeng-gang.
