Just over two months into marriage, Delhi woman dies after fall from NDMC flats; family alleges dowry murder

A tragic incident involving a young woman from Delhi has sparked intense scrutiny and raised serious concerns about dowry-related violence. The victim, identified as Akriti, was a 28-year-old newlywed who reportedly fell from the third floor of an NDMC residential complex in Delhi’s Lodhi Colony area. Her family has alleged that the incident was not a suicide but a murder orchestrated by her husband and in-laws due to dowry demands.

According to police reports, Akriti was found critically injured after the alleged fall from the B-Block of NDMC Flats at Palika Kunj on Saturday. She was immediately taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where doctors pronounced her dead. The incident has prompted authorities to initiate mandatory inquest proceedings, as the death occurred within seven years of her marriage. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has been informed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Akriti had recently tied the knot on April 24 of this year and was employed as a sales executive at a private company in Chhatarpur. Her family claims that she faced persistent harassment and physical abuse from her husband and in-laws following their marriage. They described the union as a love-cum-arranged marriage, which took place just over two months prior. The family asserts that dowry demands escalated significantly after the wedding, leading to increased pressure on Akriti. Her younger brother has voiced suspicion that the incident is being framed as a suicide to shield those responsible, emphasizing that his sister was mentally resilient and the eldest among her siblings.

This case echoes similar incidents reported in recent times, highlighting the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in Delhi and beyond. A month before Akriti’s death, a 25-year-old woman from northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of a building. Her family similarly accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment. Another notable case involved Twisha Sharma, whose death led to allegations of harassment and dowry-linked pressure from her family against her husband and in-laws. These incidents have stirred significant debate on social media regarding the need for stricter enforcement of dowry laws and better protection for women facing such pressures.

Meanwhile, another angle of the story emerged when a separate incident in Muzaffarnagar saw the exhumation of a 28-year-old woman’s body, who was also pregnant. Her father alleged that she was murdered over dowry demands and that her body was secretly buried in the village graveyard on June 29 without police notification. Authorities have registered a case against the woman’s husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law under dowry death provisions. The body was exhumed on the orders of the district magistrate, with the sub-divisional magistrate present and police ensuring security during the process. The woman had married on March 11, 2023, and her family claims she was repeatedly harassed by her in-laws over dowry issues.

These interconnected cases underscore the broader societal challenges linked to dowry practices and the systemic failures in addressing them effectively. As investigations continue into both incidents, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind these tragedies and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.
