Astronomers have identified what appears to be a Jupiter-mass object orbiting a brown dwarf in the CD-35 2722 system, challenging traditional classifications of celestial bodies. Observations made using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) suggest the presence of a large, moon-like object that orbits a brown dwarf, which in turn orbits a star. This discovery raises fundamental questions about how scientists categorise objects in space, particularly when they defy conventional definitions. The CD-35 2722 system consists of a star with roughly half the mass of the Sun, surrounded by a brown dwarf, classified as an object too massive to be considered a planet but not massive enough to sustain nuclear fusion like a true star. The newly discovered object, which the research team refers to as an exosatellite, orbits this brown dwarf. According to Kevin Hoy, an ESO student and lead author of the study, the system is “super weird” compared to our own. He notes that the largest object in the system is the star, followed by the brown dwarf, and finally the newly found object, which is at least as massive as Jupiter. The classification of this object presents a unique challenge. While it orbits a brown dwarf, it is massive enough to qualify as a planet under some criteria. However, since it does not directly orbit a star, it does not fit neatly into existing categories. Astronomers typically classify celestial bodies based on their relationship to a star, such as planets, moons, or other types of objects. In this case, the exosatellite’s position within a multi-body system complicates these distinctions. Alice Zurlo, director of the Millennium Nucleus of Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS) and a collaborator on the study, explained that the object is a “giant gaseous body orbiting a highly massive companion.” She noted that the system blurs the boundaries between stars, planets, and moons, making standard terminology less applicable. “We have a clear delineation between the planets and the sun in the solar system,” she said, “so defining things like moons is simple. In the CD-35 2722 system, where we are blurring the lines between stars, planets, and moons, the whole thing becomes more complicated to describe.” The search for exomoons has been ongoing for decades, but definitive detections remain rare. To date, over 6,000 exoplanets have been identified, yet only a handful of exomoon candidates have been observed, and evidence for many remains inconclusive. A recent attempt by a team led by Quentin Kral using ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer in the HD 206893 system yielded potential signs of a satellite but no confirmation. The current findings, however, represent a significant step forward. Hoy and his colleagues employed the CRIRES+ instrument on the VLT, applying techniques similar to those used to discover the first exoplanet around a Sun-like star. Their approach allowed them to detect subtle changes in the motion of the brown dwarf, indicating the gravitational influence of a nearby object. These observations provide compelling evidence for the existence of the exosatellite, although further verification will be necessary before its status is officially established. As the scientific community continues to refine methods for identifying and classifying distant celestial bodies, discoveries like this one highlight the evolving nature of astronomical understanding. The CD-35 2722 system exemplifies how traditional labels may not always capture the complexity of cosmic structures, prompting a reevaluation of how we define and interpret the universe.
