An IT teacher who paid a pupil £10 to clean up dog feces from her garden has been banned from working with children indefinitely after failing to disclose her relationship with a registered sex offender. Natalie Surr, 45, of Shirebrook Academy in Derbyshire, faced disciplinary action following a misconduct hearing conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency. The case came to light after concerns were raised by a member of the public in early 2024 regarding her personal life. According to the findings of the panel, Ms Surr had asked one of her students whether they knew someone who could help clear her garden of dog waste, as she planned to vacate the property soon. The pupil, identified as Pupil A, offered to assist, and the task was completed on 23 September 2023. Two days later, Ms Surr handed over £10 to the student as compensation. The pupil is described as a vulnerable individual, raising further concerns about the situation. Ms Surr had also concealed her relationship with a registered sex offender from her employer. Colleagues noted that she had multiple opportunities to disclose the information but chose not to. One colleague remarked that her behavior was akin to “getting blood from a stone.” The school received an anonymous email in January 2024 expressing alarm over the relationship. An internal investigation followed, leading to Ms Surr admitting in June 2024 that she had been in the relationship for a year and was aware of her partner's criminal history. In a statement to the panel, Ms Surr acknowledged her failures. She expressed deep regret for not being transparent and admitted that her actions fell far below professional standards. She stated, “I fully accept that I made serious mistakes in failing to disclose my relationship to the school. I recognize now that I should have been completely honest and transparent from the outset.” The panel determined that the misconduct was severe and warranted a permanent ban from teaching. They emphasized that the public interest in protecting children outweighed any consideration of Ms Surr’s personal circumstances. The panel highlighted the duration of her secrecy and the risks posed by allowing a student to perform the gardening task without supervision while she was in a relationship with a registered sex offender. The decision was based on the panel’s assessment that Ms Surr’s conduct represented a serious breach of professional ethics. They concluded that her actions were unacceptable and fell significantly short of the expectations placed upon educators. As a result, Ms Surr will be prohibited from working in schools, sixth form colleges, youth accommodations, or children’s homes for an indefinite period. Ms Surr may seek to have the prohibition lifted after three years, but until then, she will be barred from engaging in roles involving direct contact with children. The case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability within the education sector, particularly concerning matters that could impact student safety.
