Counsel assisting the coroner, Darren Evans, opened the inquest in the South Australia Coroners Court, stating the court would request Deputy State Coroner Naomi Kereru to determine whether Ethan Grosvenor had killed his mother. The inquiry will also examine whether safety concerns had been identified and addressed after Ethan Grosvenor’s death. According to Evans, police initially believed Tracee Ann Grosvenor was in the driver’s seat when they arrived at the crash site on December 4, 2022. However, subsequent DNA analysis revealed that her body had been moved. Her lower legs and torso were found in the driver’s seat, while her upper body lay across the center console toward the passenger side. Evans noted that members of the South Australian Police Force’s Major Crash Section concluded that the injuries Tracee Ann Grosvenor sustained were inconsistent with the collision dynamics if she had been driving. DNA evidence confirmed that Ethan Grosvenor was the one operating the vehicle at the time of impact. After the crash, he reportedly lifted his mother’s body over his shoulder and placed her in the driver’s seat. An independent witness testified that she saw the same car parked by the roadside around 10:30 PM on December 3, with Tracee Ann Grosvenor in the passenger seat, appearing visibly distressed. Ethan Grosvenor was detained under the Mental Health Act, which allows South Australian doctors to legally treat and, in some instances, detain individuals suffering from mental illness. Ethan Grosvenor died on December 14, 2022, after leaving the waiting area of the Adelaide Dental Hospital on North Terrace in the city’s central business district. During his visit, he was accompanied by his occupational therapist, Rachael Rolla, due to his risk of absconding. Rolla stated that Ethan Grosvenor requested to use the restroom and did not return. She added that there was no existing protocol in place at the time regarding what staff should do if a patient asked to go to the bathroom. Rolla also mentioned that Ethan Grosvenor had previously gone missing from the hospital on December 9, 2022, while being supervised by registered nurse Jennifer Williams. When questioned about whether she considered the prior disappearance, Rolla said she did not believe it was appropriate to follow a male patient to the restroom. Following Ethan Grosvenor’s death, changes have been implemented to the protocols governing mental health patients' movements outside clinical settings. Tracee Ann Grosvenor’s sister, Julie Chapman, expressed hope that the inquest would provide clarity and justice for her family. She criticized the system for failing them, saying they felt overlooked and neglected. Chapman highlighted Ethan Grosvenor’s history of mental health struggles and incidents of violence toward his mother, adding that mental health services had not adequately intervened. She called for greater recognition of mental health issues and more attentive listening to families in similar situations. Deputy State Coroner Naomi Kereru is set to present her findings in the coming weeks.
