A small, uninhabited island off the coast of Croatia, known as Blitvenica, has long been a favorite destination for local fishermen due to its rich marine life and one of the country’s most impressive lighthouses. Located west of the island of Zirje, this rocky island hosts a lighthouse built in 1872, which continues to serve as both a navigational aid and a symbol of maritime heritage. The lighthouse, standing 21 meters tall with an octagonal stone tower and a house over 200 square meters in size, features a courtyard surrounded by a generator, boats, and a watchtower. Its light can be seen for up to 24 nautical miles into the open sea, and it is maintained by a permanent crew. Until the early 20th century, the lighthouse was classified as a first-category beacon, requiring three keepers on duty. With the automation of lighting systems, fewer staff were needed, and today, only one keeper manages the facility. For those planning a visit, the lighthouse is approximately 18 nautical miles from the mainland, accessible primarily by boat. The journey from locations such as Šibenik, Vodič, Tribunja, Primošten, or Brodaric typically takes around three hours by small motorboat. Access to the island itself is restricted, though visitors can observe the lighthouse from their vessels. In case of emergencies or rough seas, the keeper will assist if requested. Blitvenica is particularly favored by fishermen for its abundant underwater resources. The area is known for its diverse fish population, including bluefin tuna, swordfish, sea bass, and other species. The nearby waters also occasionally host the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, making the site not only economically valuable but also ecologically significant. Experienced fishermen often claim that simply dipping the fishing line into the water can yield results, making the location suitable even for newcomers or occasional anglers. This accessibility combined with the presence of a well-maintained lighthouse contributes to the island's appeal among local communities and visitors alike.
