Desry Lesele, Senior Manager for Agribusiness Client Value Propositions at Nedbank Commercial Banking, emphasized that while traditional elements like land, machinery, and supplier relationships remain crucial, digital solutions are now playing a central role in modern farming. The shift toward digital integration is supported by South Africa’s growing technological infrastructure. Mobile phone usage is nearly universal, smartphones are widely used, and internet access reaches nearly 80% of the population, according to World Bank research. These developments provide a solid foundation for the expansion of digital tools in agriculture. Farmers are leveraging these platforms to compare prices, seek advice, and access financial services, which helps them navigate the complexities of modern farming. Lesele noted that early studies indicated only about 26% of smallholder farmers were utilizing digital technologies. However, this figure is steadily increasing as digital tools become more accessible and beneficial. A major factor driving this transformation, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is the mounting pressure on farmers to boost productivity amid heightened uncertainties. Agricultural businesses face ongoing challenges such as rising input costs, shrinking profit margins, unpredictable weather conditions, and fluctuating commodity prices. These issues underscore the importance of timely, data-driven decision-making, which digital platforms facilitate by providing improved access to market information, enhancing price transparency, and simplifying purchasing and financing processes. Nedbank Agribusiness has observed this trend firsthand through its collaboration with PrysWys, an online agri-input marketplace launched in May of last year. This partnership aims to bridge a critical gap in agriculture by linking farmers directly with trusted suppliers at competitive rates. Through the PrysWys platform, farmers can request quotes, compare prices, place orders, and obtain pre-approved financing for essential inputs like fertilizer, seeds, livestock feed, and fuel. This initiative is helping to streamline how farmers procure necessary supplies, particularly in regions where availability might otherwise pose a challenge. The platform enhances price discovery, ensures transparency, and increases accessibility to vital inputs. Since its launch, the Nedbank-PrysWys partnership has seen an 80% rise in user numbers, indicating that digital engagement is translating into tangible financial actions. Farmers are growing more confident in managing aspects of their operations online, treating it not as an auxiliary task but as an integral component of their daily activities. As digital adoption continues to expand, these platforms hold the potential to elevate the entire agricultural value chain. They could enhance access to inputs and financing while boosting overall efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness within the sector. Lesele highlighted that this transition does not aim to replace established relationships in agriculture. Instead, it seeks to integrate digital solutions seamlessly into existing frameworks. This includes offering financing options directly through platforms like PrysWys, ensuring that funds are available at the moment of purchase rather than requiring a separate application process.
