Heavy rain lashed Uttarakhand on Tuesday, causing severe waterlogging in Nainital and Bhimtal, with flood-like conditions emerging on roads and streets. The India Meteorological Department had issued yellow and orange alerts for much of the state, indicating the potential for heavy precipitation and associated risks. Videos circulating online captured the extent of the flooding, showing streams overflowing into the Bhimtal bypass and entire neighborhoods submerged in muddy waters. In one clip, residents could be seen wading through knee-deep water, while others attempted to move vehicles from flooded streets. The downpour has affected multiple districts in Uttarakhand, with rivers swelling and posing threats to nearby communities. In Dehradun, the Tamasa River rose sharply due to overnight rains, prompting authorities to close all schools from Classes 1 to 12, as well as Anganwadi centers, to ensure the safety of students and staff. The impact of the heavy rainfall extended beyond Uttarakhand, with rising water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh leading to floodwaters entering homes in Prayagraj. In Varanasi, the Ganga River's water level has been steadily increasing due to sustained rainfall upstream, resulting in low-lying areas being inundated. Emergency services in the affected regions have been placed on high alert, with response teams stationed near riverbanks to monitor the situation and prevent any incidents. In Dehradun, two fatalities were reported after a four-wheel drive vehicle was swept away by a powerful water current near Kandoli Bridge on Poundha Road in Prem Nagar area. A young woman was rescued following the incident, according to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The SDRF confirmed receiving reports late at night about the SUV being carried away by rainwater and immediately dispatching a team to the location. The weather department's forecast indicated continued light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in several districts, including Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, and Haridwar. Orange alerts were issued for Almora, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, signaling a higher risk of severe weather conditions. These alerts underscored the need for heightened vigilance among residents and officials alike. Residents in Bhimtal faced particularly dire circumstances, with footage showing water seeping into homes and entire neighborhoods grappling with waterlogging. One video captured a mudslide occurring amidst the heavy rainfall, adding to the challenges faced by locals trying to navigate their daily lives. The situation prompted local administrations to take proactive measures, deploying emergency personnel and maintaining communication channels to address any arising concerns promptly. In Rishikesh, the Ganga River's water level has also risen due to continuous downpours in the Garhwal division. Despite this increase, the river remains below the warning threshold, offering some relief to residents in the immediate vicinity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that any potential threats are mitigated effectively. As the monsoon season progresses, the focus remains on preparedness and response strategies to safeguard communities against further adverse weather impacts.
