Government to go ahead with expansion of programme to help young children's language

New Zealand's government has decided to expand the Enrich programme, which aims to improve language development in children under five years old. The Education Minister, Erica Stanford, stated that the initiative, currently operating in 65 early childhood services, will scale up to 525 services. This decision follows a trial period showing improved oral language skills and better self-regulation among participating children. The government allocated $12.4 million for this programme in the previous budget. According to Stanford, the need arises due to concerns about increased screen time affecting parent-child interaction quality, leading to language delays and behavioral issues. The programme focuses on training early childhood educators to enhance children's language abilities through daily interactions, play, and conversations.
