German prosecutors arrest Rwanda genocide suspect

German prosecutors have arrested a man suspected of involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, during which over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed. The suspect, identified as Innocent S., was arrested in Hesse and is accused of ordering the deaths of 25 Tutsis while working as an assistant to the mayor of Kayove in northwest Rwanda. He is also alleged to have participated in one murder, created death lists, and incited attacks against Tutsis. Germany has previously prosecuted other genocide suspects using universal jurisdiction laws. Survivors' accounts highlight the genocide's brutality, including widespread sexual violence, while the international community largely failed to intervene until the Rwandan Patriotic Front, led by current President Paul Kagame, ended the conflict.
