The Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia has approved Law No. 86, which reinstates the four provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste, and Udine with their previous territorial boundaries and directly elected governing bodies. The new legislation, introduced following amendments to the regional statute through Constitutional Law 1/2026, establishes a three-tier governance system involving municipalities, provinces, and the region. Each province will have a council, executive body, and president elected by citizens. The president serves five years with a maximum of two consecutive terms. The provincial councils will also serve five years, with the number of members determined by a future regional electoral law. Until December 31, 2028, provincial governments will consist of a president and three deputies. A gender clause mandates at least 40% representation of both genders. From January 1, 2027, provinces will take over functions previously held by Edrs, including school infrastructure and道路
