Federal authorities in Nigeria have taken a major step toward improving disaster preparedness by forming a unified early warning system, according to reports from local media. The effort involves collaboration between government agencies and international bodies such as the United Nations. The initiative aims to enhance the nation's ability to respond to flooding and other climate-related threats by ensuring timely and actionable alerts reach affected populations. The meeting took place in Abuja, where representatives from several key organizations gathered to discuss strategies for implementing the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative. This program, backed by the United Nations, seeks to improve disaster resilience by integrating resources and expertise from multiple sectors. Attendees included officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). Also present was a representative from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). During the session, the NEMA director-general, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, emphasized the significance of the collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s disaster risk management capabilities. She referenced the United Nations Secretary-General’s description of the EW4All Initiative as a “survival agenda for humanity.” Umar linked the initiative to broader national priorities, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on climate adaptation, and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. These frameworks aim to protect lives, preserve developmental progress, and foster community resilience against environmental challenges. Dr. Aminu Maida, head of the Nigerian Communications Commission, underscored the role of effective communication in the success of early warning systems. He pledged the NCC’s support in ensuring that alerts reach vulnerable communities promptly. Maida pointed out that each institution present plays a unique and essential role, requiring coordination to maximize protection against floods and other emergencies. Dr. Matthew Adepoju, representing NASRDA, highlighted the potential of satellite technology and space-based data in predicting and responding to disasters. He assured that the agency would contribute its technical knowledge to bolster Nigeria’s early warning infrastructure. Similarly, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Mohammed, director-general of NIHSA, explained how accurate hydrological forecasts can help governments and communities prepare for floods, thus minimizing harm to lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure. He praised NEMA for organizing the meeting and reiterated NIHSA’s dedication to supporting the initiative through flood forecasts and technical assistance. Prof. Charles Anosike, NiMet’s director-general, confirmed the agency’s readiness to supply timely weather and climate data to aid in disaster preparedness nationwide. Meanwhile, Mr. Muliro Mashauri, representing UNDRR, lauded the collaborative approach, calling it a model of coordinated disaster risk reduction in West Africa. He commended the decision to unite leaders from different institutions to tackle shared challenges related to early warnings and disaster mitigation. Following the discussions, the participating agencies reaffirmed their collective commitment to developing an efficient, inclusive, and people-centered early warning system. The next steps will likely involve drafting detailed plans, allocating necessary resources, and initiating pilot projects to test the system’s effectiveness. The goal is to create a robust framework that ensures Nigerians are better equipped to face future climate-related crises.
