Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar has proposed chess legend Judit Polgar as the country's next president, offering her the role until a new constitution is adopted. The announcement came after President Katalin Novak confirmed she would step down on July 20 under a constitutional amendment, which she described as a "grave and shameful historical example of political power abuse." Magyar revealed his proposal on Sunday via Facebook, stating he planned to meet with Polgar to ask if she was ready to serve the nation in this new capacity. He emphasized that it would be an honor if the five-time Olympiad champion accepted the invitation. Polgar, widely regarded as the greatest female chess player of all time, has been recommended by 16 prominent Hungarian figures in science, culture, and sports. In an open letter sent to parliamentary speaker Anna Mosonyi, they urged Polgar, who is 49 years old, to take on the presidency. Magyar echoed their sentiments, saying Polgar would be the ideal person to lead the country during a time when unity is needed and a president could inspire pride among Hungarians. As the most successful chess player in history, Polgar led the world rankings for women for 26 consecutive years and ranked among the top ten globally.
