Edo State officials announced plans to demolish buildings and structures located on waterways and flood channels as part of broader efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding. The decision was outlined during a media briefing held in Benin City on Monday by Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA). According to Idahosa, the agency has identified numerous instances where residential and commercial constructions have encroached upon critical water bodies, including the Benin moat. These developments have contributed to the obstruction of natural drainage systems, thereby increasing the likelihood of severe flooding during the rainy season. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the frequency and intensity of flood-related disasters in the region. Idahosa highlighted that the state government has already initiated the process of documenting individuals impacted by recent flooding events. This includes approximately 1,000 farmers whose agricultural land was submerged, along with 57 residents who faced displacement due to flooding in Igarra. The data collected will aid in coordinating relief operations and long-term recovery strategies. In addition to identifying vulnerable populations, authorities have taken steps to ensure public safety ahead of potential flood scenarios. Communities in Illushi within Esan South-East Local Government Area, as well as parts of Etsako Central and Etsako East, have been flagged as high-risk zones. Residents living in these regions have been urged to vacate their homes and relocate to elevated ground. Such proactive measures aim to minimize casualties and damage during future flood episodes. The demolition campaign is being coordinated with multiple state agencies, including the Ministry of Environment and the Edo Waste Management Board. Officials emphasized that illegal dumping of refuse has played a significant role in clogging drainage channels, exacerbating the problem. Efforts are underway to enforce stricter penalties against individuals responsible for such activities. Furthermore, collaboration with the Ministry of Physical Planning is focused on identifying properties built on previously designated waterways. Once identified, these structures will be targeted for removal to restore proper water flow and prevent further urban inundation. Community leaders have reportedly engaged in the unauthorized filling of moats, which were originally designed to serve as natural flood channels. These actions have led to the conversion of vital waterways into residential and commercial spaces, undermining the state's ability to manage flood risks effectively. The partnership with the Ministry of Physical Planning aims to address this issue by marking and subsequently removing these illegally occupied sites. Meteorological forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency indicate that Edo and surrounding states are likely to experience increased rainfall during the upcoming wet season. In light of these warnings, state governments have ramped up awareness programs, evacuation protocols, and infrastructure maintenance initiatives. These combined efforts represent a multi-faceted approach to reducing the vulnerability of communities to flood-induced crises.
