Colombia faces a growing demographic shift with an aging population, prompting urgent discussions on how society can adapt to support longer life expectancy. The country is increasingly recognizing the need to rethink economic structures, employment opportunities, and social services to accommodate a generation that expects to remain active and financially secure well into old age. This transformation has been highlighted during recent initiatives aimed at promoting innovation and entrepreneurship among older adults, particularly through programs such as the Premio Innova Mayor, organized by the Fondo de Pensiones y Cesantías Porvenir. According to economist Mauricio Reina, three out of four Colombians over the retirement age lack sufficient savings or investments to ensure a stable financial future. As a result, many continue working beyond traditional retirement ages, often starting small businesses. A study conducted by the University of Rosario reveals that nearly six million micro-enterprises exist in Colombia, with approximately 80 percent operated by individuals aged 50 and above. Only one in five of these businesses holds a tax registration, indicating a significant portion operate informally. Most of these enterprises were created out of necessity rather than opportunity, yet 70 percent have been operational for more than a decade. The implications of this trend extend across multiple sectors including housing, healthcare, education, technology, tourism, mobility, and finance. Continuous education, once considered a niche market, is now gaining prominence as older adults seek ways to stay engaged and relevant in the workforce. The Premio Innova Mayor initiative aims to foster an ecosystem tailored to the needs of those over 50 years old, offering job creation, business support, ongoing training, investment products, and social engagement spaces designed to enhance overall well-being. In its second edition, the Premio Innova Mayor received 629 applications from public and private entities nationwide, a 50 percent increase from the previous year. This growth reflects a broader awareness of the demographic changes occurring both within Colombia and globally. Miguel Largacha Martinez, president of Porvenir, emphasizes the importance of continuing to educate older adults, valuing their contributions to business and economic growth, and tapping into the potential of this demographic to drive innovation and competitiveness. During the First Business Congress titled "El Futuro es Plateado," held alongside the second edition of the Premio Innova Mayor, it became evident that life expectancy is increasing, necessitating substantial transformations to achieve physical, mental, and financial health. One key consideration is the rising number of families choosing not to have children, as well as young people opting to pursue higher education or other career paths. These trends underscore the evolving nature of family dynamics and societal expectations, further emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to address the challenges and opportunities presented by an aging population.
