The Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) will receive an R11.9 million renovation focused on improving its ablution facilities ahead of the upcoming 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit, which will take place in August 2026. President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to attend the summit, during which he will lead discussions on regional industrialisation and economic integration. The summit, scheduled from August 3 to 18, will mark South Africa’s chairmanship of SADC for the next year, offering an opportunity to bolster regional cooperation and development efforts. In preparation for the summit, the city of Durban has undertaken several measures to ensure the successful hosting of both the SADC summit and the concurrent SADC Industrialisation Week, which runs from July 27 to 31. These events aim to advance the implementation of the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap (2015–2063), with a focus on promoting regional industrialisation, investment, trade, infrastructure development, and economic integration. During their visit, SADC leaders will tour key industrial sites in Durban, underscoring the city’s role as a hub for regional economic activity. The SADC 2026 summit will carry the theme “Resilient, Sustainable, and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.” This theme reflects the broader goals of the SADC region to foster equitable growth and development while addressing challenges such as climate change, resource management, and social inclusion. The summit will serve as a platform for member states to share experiences, coordinate policies, and align strategies to achieve common objectives. The decision to upgrade the Durban ICC’s ablution facilities came after a site inspection conducted by a team from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco). The team reportedly found the existing facilities inadequate and recommended improvements to meet international standards. City Manager Musa Mbhele confirmed that the necessary budget approvals were granted, emphasizing the urgency of the project. He noted that time was limited, given the proximity of the summit, and that adjustments would need to be made to the city’s overall budget to accommodate the renovations. The SADC organization comprises 16 member states, including Angola, Botswana, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These nations collaborate on issues ranging from economic policy to regional security, making the summit a crucial gathering for shaping the future of southern Africa. The choice of Durban as the host city recognizes the municipality’s progress under the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG), which was established to enhance governance and service delivery in the area. As part of the PeWG initiative, an additional workstream focused on economic development has been launched to further support the city’s growth ambitions. This effort aligns with the broader national and regional priorities of fostering sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The upgrades to the Durban ICC reflect the commitment to ensuring that all aspects of the summit, including logistical and infrastructural elements, are prepared to the highest standard. The renovations will not only improve visitor experience but also demonstrate the city’s capacity to host high-level international events.
