Digitale Schiene: Bund zieht positive Bilanz bei neuen Stellwerken

The German federal government has provided a generally positive assessment of progress made in modernizing the country's rail infrastructure through digital signaling technology (DSTW). The initiative, launched in 2020, aims to renew railway technology and expand the market for signaling system providers to reduce dependence on a few established companies. The program includes significant funding—around 2.3 billion euros allocated in the 2024 budget—for digital rail initiatives, including nearly 350 million euros for equipping the strategically important Rhine-Alpine corridor with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Technical milestones include the implementation of standardized interfaces, which allow components and systems from different manufacturers to be integrated more flexibly, promoting competition and enabling smaller suppliers to enter the market.
