DENR restores 98 hectares of mangrove forests on Quezon island

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has completed the restoration of approximately 98 hectares of mangrove forests in Jomalig, Quezon, which were damaged by typhoons. The project, part of several environmental programs, aims to enhance coastal protection against storm surges and support marine biodiversity. The restored mangroves provide crucial habitats for fish and other marine life, contributing to sustainable fisheries and community livelihoods. Jomalig, located in the Polillo Island Group, is particularly vulnerable to typhoons and oceanic conditions. Environmental laws now prohibit the cutting of mangroves, leading to reduced deforestation for charcoal production and fishpond expansion in many parts of Quezon.
