Pour des raisons de confidentialité WhatsApp utilise désormais des noms d'utilisateur plutôt que des numéros de téléphone portable

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature allowing users to communicate using display names instead of their phone numbers. Starting in late June, users will be able to reserve desired usernames, which will gradually roll out globally throughout the year. Currently, new chat contacts see the phone number linked to a WhatsApp account, but users can now choose to show only their username. The phone number remains visible only to those who have already saved it in their phone book. During calls, the username will appear instead of the number. A phone number is still required for registration. This change aligns WhatsApp with other messaging apps like Signal and Telegram, which have offered similar features since early 2024. According to WhatsApp, there will be no public directory of usernames, and contact can only be made by knowing the exact username. Additionally, users can optionally activate a security code for initial contact.
