Daniel Mas, the Chilean minister of Economy, Fomento and Tourism, and Minister of Mining, announced during an interview with Pulso that the government will soon unveil a new package of employment-focused measures aimed at addressing the country’s economic challenges. The announcement comes amid a renewed communication strategy by the administration to tackle the difficult economic situation. Mas has gained prominence within the cabinet in recent weeks due to his leadership role in the Interministerial Employment Committee and his shared responsibility for economic messaging, traditionally dominated by Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz. The proposed measures are intended to support multiple productive sectors, including forestry and mining, while also activating housing programs and public works projects. This week, Mas met with representatives from major domestic mining companies, seeking their logistical and professional support in responding to the climate emergency affecting large parts of the nation. According to Mas, the mining firms have shown immediate availability, offering machinery, geologists, rescue teams, trucks, buses, and storage facilities to assist in the crisis. Mas, who is both a businessman and former union leader, described the transition into public service as a significant shift. He noted that his initial entry into the labor movement was over two decades ago, and his appointment as biminister was motivated by a desire to improve the lives of many Chileans through effective public policies and management. In four months, he claims there has already been noticeable progress, with the economy moving forward, a clear economic plan being implemented, and a more efficient approach to governance emerging. He acknowledged the differences between private and public sectors, stating that while public institutions often struggle to act cohesively toward a common goal, he has encountered individuals within the public service committed to improving Chile's conditions. He believes there is substantial potential to enhance the efficiency and speed of public sector operations. When asked about the importance of increasing his visibility and popularity in public opinion polls, Mas emphasized that while they currently have a favorable evaluation, there is still work to be done in terms of recognition. He pointed out that coming from a non-political background means there is much to learn in order to influence decisions made by the general population. Regarding his increased presence in economic discussions and the Interministerial Employment Committee, some observers view this as support for Quiroz, while others see it as a reduction in the latter’s influence. Mas explained that his role is complementary to Quiroz’s, noting that the finance minister focuses on macroeconomic issues such as GDP, fiscal deficits, and interest rates, whereas he concentrates on fostering confidence, investment, growth, and employment. He stressed that their collaboration has been highly effective. In the realm of employment, Labor Minister Tomás Rau is working on structural reforms that are crucial for the country, aligning with efforts to rebuild the economy. Meanwhile, Housing Minister Poduje is pushing reforms in the housing sector that generate jobs. Mas’s team is focusing on creating employment opportunities through these initiatives, which he says are aligned with the primary concern of the populace, employment.
