British military says cargo ship reports attack in the Red Sea off Yemen

A cargo ship was attacked by unknown armed assailants off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred approximately 30 nautical miles southwest of Hodeida, a city controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The attackers approached the ship in a small boat, opened fire, and retreated to a larger vessel with its tracking system disabled. The cargo ship and its crew were unharmed, and authorities are investigating the incident. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The Houthis have previously targeted commercial vessels in the region, prompting shipping companies to reroute their vessels around the southern tip of Africa. Somali pirates have also been active in the area, with a separate attack reported earlier this month.
