Officers earned medals for their achievements, and their careers were defined by loyalty and sacrifice. Today, however, the narrative has shifted dramatically, with many officers now associated with scandal rather than heroism. Major-General Bala Naidoo, a retired police official, began his career with the Railways Police before advancing through the ranks of the SAP, ultimately serving over four decades and becoming a respected figure in police communications. Reservist status also emerged as a crucial pathway into the profession. Volunteers trained in basic police procedures and participated in investigative and operational tasks, earning recognition and eventual full-time employment.
