Poland has formally requested the United States to extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is wanted on corruption charges. The request was submitted through diplomatic channels, according to a spokesperson for Poland’s General Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw. Ziobro, a member of the right-wing ruling party Law and Justice (PiS), fled to Hungary last year after being accused of multiple crimes, including alleged membership in a criminal organization and misappropriation of approximately 35 million euros. After Orban’s defeat in elections, new Hungarian leader Peter Magyar announced his country would no longer protect Ziobro. In May, Ziobro moved to the United States. Polish prosecutors allege that Ziobro faces 26 charges, which could result in up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted. Ziobro has rejected these accusations, calling them “reckless” and claiming he is being targeted politically. His legal team has argued that the charges against him lack sufficient evidence and are part of a broader campaign to undermine his political career. Ziobro served as minister of justice from 2016 to 2023 during the tenure of the PiS government. During this time, his ministry was embroiled in several controversies, including allegations of misuse of public funds and interference in judicial independence. Critics have accused the PiS administration of using the judiciary as a tool to consolidate power. Ziobro himself has been a vocal supporter of the party’s policies, often defending its actions in public statements and media appearances.
