Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old formerly student-athlete, has launched a legal challenge against his murder conviction, alleging that the judge overseeing his trial showed bias and violated his constitutional rights. This comes through a series of post-conviction motions filed by his newly hired legal team, which includes attorney Russell Wilson. These motions seek to overturn Anthony’s conviction, which resulted in a 35-year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas.

The case began on April 2, 2025, when Anthony and Metcalf, both students at Centennial High School and Memorial High School respectively, were involved in a violent altercation at a district-wide track meet. According to court records, Anthony stabbed Metcalf, leading to his death. A jury found Anthony guilty of murder, and the sentencing followed shortly thereafter. Now, nearly two months later, Anthony's legal team is challenging the validity of the trial and the integrity of the judicial process.

Anthony's defense team, led by Wilson, is asserting that Collin County Judge John Roach displayed partiality and violated Anthony's right to a public trial. They claim that the judge's public remarks following the trial, including his praise for the jury's decision and his defense of his rulings, have created an appearance of bias. Specifically, the defense points to Roach's comments defending his exclusion of three Black potential jurors and his justification for restricting media access to the courtroom. These actions, according to the defense, undermine the perception of impartiality required under the Constitution.

The motions also highlight concerns about the trial's procedural fairness. The defense argues that the courtroom was effectively closed to the public, with only 27 seats available for spectators and cameras banned. This limited access, they contend, violates Anthony's Sixth Amendment right to a public trial. Additionally, the defense asserts that prosecutors breached an informal agreement to exclude certain types of evidence—specifically, character and "extraneous offense" evidence—which forced Anthony into a dilemma: either testify and risk exposure to prejudicial information or remain silent.

Another point of contention involves the jury instructions. The defense claims these instructions made it harder for jurors to properly evaluate Anthony's claim of self-defense. Furthermore, the attorneys note that the judge rushed the trial, scheduling a weekend court date when several defense witnesses were unavailable. During the critical moment when Anthony had to decide whether to testify, the court allowed only ten minutes for counsel to advise him, denying a request for additional time.

In response to these allegations, Judge Roach has maintained that his decisions were justified. He defended his restriction on media access, stating that such measures were necessary to protect the integrity of the judicial process. Roach also expressed confidence in the jury's verdict, calling it correct and noting that the trial was conducted fairly. However, the defense argues that these public statements, combined with the judge's sealing of the trial file and limiting access to it, have compromised the fairness of the ongoing post-trial proceedings.

As the legal battle unfolds, the outcome of these motions will determine whether Anthony's conviction stands or if a new trial is warranted. With the judge set to refer the recusal request to a higher administrative body, the situation remains in flux.
