Andhra Pradesh's literacy rate has crossed the national average, reaching 82.10% in 2026, up from 72.60% in 2024. This marks a significant improvement over the past two years, according to data released by the state government. The increase comes amid ongoing efforts to boost educational access and quality under the 'Akshara Andhra' initiative, which was launched by the previous administration. The transformation in literacy levels reflects a concerted push by the state's Human Resources Development Minister, Nara Lokesh, who has taken decisive steps to address gaps in education. When he assumed his role two years ago, Bihar had a literacy rate of 74.30%, slightly higher than Andhra Pradesh's initial figure of 72.60%. Since then, the state has managed to close much of that gap, achieving a notable turnaround in its educational landscape. The success of the 'Akshara Andhra' program has been attributed to targeted interventions aimed at increasing literacy rates. According to an official statement, approximately 25 lakh individuals have become literate through the program. With these results, the state government has set ambitious goals, aiming to bring another 25 lakh people into the fold by March 2027, with the ultimate target of achieving 100% literacy by the end of September 2027. To ensure sustained progress, Minister Lokesh has instructed officials to engage local leaders, including Members of Legislative Assembly and other public representatives, in the implementation of the 'Akshara Andhra' program. These efforts aim to enhance awareness and encourage more participation among communities. Additionally, there is a focus on identifying and enrolling children who remain outside the formal education system. Currently, 1,64,821 school-age children are not enrolled in schools. However, around 33,000 of these children have already been enrolled this year. Information regarding the remaining children has been disseminated to school heads via the LEAP app, facilitating better coordination and oversight. The state continues to monitor attendance figures, with teacher attendance standing at 98.97% and student attendance at 85.41%. Minister Lokesh has also underscored the need for a holistic approach to education, emphasizing the importance of mental development and creating stress-free environments for students. As part of this strategy, directives have been issued to establish autism support centers at 125 locations throughout the state. These centers will provide specialized services tailored to meet the unique needs of autistic learners, ensuring they receive appropriate educational support. Looking ahead, the state government plans to continue its momentum by expanding outreach programs and improving infrastructure. With the current trajectory, Andhra Pradesh appears well-positioned to meet its goal of universal literacy within the projected timeframe. The continued engagement of local authorities and the integration of technology into educational planning suggest a robust framework for sustaining and enhancing literacy outcomes in the region.
