America's first major offshore wind project is up and running, but plagued with problems

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently celebrated the completion of Vineyard Wind, the United States' first large-scale offshore wind farm, which was intended to reduce electricity costs and cut carbon emissions. Despite facing opposition from residents, environmental groups, and former federal policies under the Trump administration, the project is now operational. However, it is struggling with significant technical challenges, including underperformance of the turbines, which are producing less than half the expected energy output. Legal disputes between Vineyard Wind and its turbine supplier, GE Vernova, have further complicated matters, with both parties involved in a financial dispute over $360 million. The project remains uncertain in terms of its ability to achieve full operational capacity and financial viability.
