According to the committee, Mr. Dershowitz had served as a legal advisor to Epstein until their relationship ended in 2007 after Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges involving the solicitation of prostitution from a minor. Despite the termination of their professional ties, emails obtained from Epstein’s files reveal that Mr. Dershowitz maintained communication with him and continued to offer legal guidance up until 2019, the year Epstein died. Prior to his withdrawal, Mr. Dershowitz had shown interest in cooperating with the committee. He had participated in discussions about Epstein’s conduct, describing the financier’s behavior toward young women as concerning but not necessarily illegal. During a May interview on the podcast “Pod Force One,” Mr. Dershowitz claimed that Epstein was interested in teenagers aged 16 to 18, which he did not classify as pedophilia. Instead, he suggested that Epstein engaged in a form of transactional relationships, offering money in exchange for services such as massages. He further argued that some of the girls who received financial compensation from a victim fund had not actually met Epstein and were instead influenced by others to claim they had done so. Epstein, who died by suicide in a New York City jail in 2019 while awaiting federal charges, was accused of orchestrating a widespread sex trafficking network. His co-conspirator, Ghislaine Maxwell, currently serves a 20-year prison sentence for her role in facilitating these crimes. The Oversight Committee has been conducting a broad inquiry into Epstein’s operations, interviewing numerous high-profile figures linked to him, including Bill Gates and former President Bill Clinton. Among the upcoming witnesses is Jes Staley, a former banking executive whose career was impacted by his ties to Epstein. Staley recently lost an appeal against a UK financial regulator’s decision to bar him from the industry due to those connections. Despite the extensive list of witnesses, all have denied any direct participation in or awareness of Epstein’s alleged crimes.
