The article discusses the underutilization of waste heat generated by large data centers, particularly those used for AI computing. Despite the potential to supply heating to nearby communities, only about ten percent of this waste heat is currently being used. The example of a data center in the Ostalbkreis region highlights the opportunity to provide heat to local residents using existing infrastructure. Experts argue that with the growing demand for AI applications, more data centers will be built, leading to increased waste heat production. However, the lack of investment in necessary infrastructure and suitable end-users for this heat remains a barrier to its effective utilization.
