Two police officers were killed in a fatal crash on the A66 in South Bank, Teesside, on Saturday morning, according to Cleveland Police. The victims were PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, both serving with the force. A large white tent has been set up over the crash site, and drones have been prohibited from operating nearby due to the sensitive nature of the location. The Volkswagen Passat was reportedly traveling against the flow of traffic on the A66 when it collided with the police vehicle. Cleveland Police stated that officers had sighted a suspicious vehicle earlier and initiated a pursuit before the car entered the motorway. However, the pursuit appears to have concluded prior to the collision. Surveillance footage shared online showed a car speeding down a residential street, pursued by police vehicles with lights and sirens activated. Local resident Ellie Westerman described the incident as frightening, noting the intense vibrations and loud noises that woke her from sleep. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. The inquiry aims to determine whether there were any procedural lapses or contributing factors to the collision. Meanwhile, Chief Constable Victoria Fuller expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that the loss is being felt across communities, by the police family, and by partner agencies. She emphasized that the officers were brave individuals who dedicated their lives to protecting the public and did not return home to their families after their shifts. Fuller and Deputy Chief Constable visited the families of the deceased officers to offer condolences and support. The Cleveland Police Federation’s chairwoman, Lauren Somerville, described the emotional impact on the force, calling the grief “all-consuming and overwhelming.” She noted that the officers who should have been returning home to their loved ones are instead remembered for their sacrifice. The federation pledged full support to the families of the fallen officers. Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed devastation over the loss of life, acknowledging the bravery of the officers and thanking the emergency services for their tireless efforts under challenging conditions. He urged the public to refrain from speculation about the incident.
