As of July 1, 2026, 5,839 patients in Andhra Pradesh are waiting for life-saving organ transplants, according to data released by Jeevandan, the state's organ donation and transplantation authority. Most of these individuals are seeking kidney or liver transplants, with thousands more needing other vital organs such as hearts, lungs, and pancreases. The numbers reflect both the demand for transplants and the progress made in increasing organ donations over recent years. The situation comes ahead of National Organ Donation Day on August 3, during which Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav called on families to consider organ donation and make informed choices. To raise awareness, a state-level program organized by Jeevandan was scheduled for August 2 in Visakhapatnam, with the minister participating. His message emphasized the importance of understanding brain death, which he described as irreversible and distinct from a coma, from which recovery is possible. Organ donation rates in Andhra Pradesh have shown consistent improvement. In 2023, there were 41 donors, rising to 66 in 2024 and hitting a new high of 93 in 2025. These figures contributed to 301 successful organ transplant surgeries in 2025, the highest recorded by Jeevandan. As of July 24, 2026, 56 donors had already been registered this year, indicating continued momentum in the sector. The expansion of transplant services has also been notable. Initially limited to three hospitals, the network now includes nine facilities spread across multiple regions. Services have extended beyond traditional northern coastal areas into cities such as Vijayawada, Guntur, Prakasam, Tirupati, Nellore, Kurnool, and Anantapur. This geographical diversification aims to improve access to transplant care for more patients. Among the 5,839 patients awaiting transplants, the majority, 3,715, are waiting for kidneys, followed by 2,009 for liver transplants. Smaller groups include 96 for heart transplants, 15 for lung transplants, and four for pancreatic transplants. Blood group distribution shows that the largest number of patients awaiting organs belong to the O blood group (2,600), followed by B (1,721), A (1,179), and AB (339). Health Minister Yadav highlighted that a single organ donation can potentially save up to eight lives. He noted that the government currently offers ₹10,000 in funeral assistance to donor families and is considering further measures to recognize their contributions. This financial support is intended to alleviate some of the economic burdens faced by families who choose to donate. Dr. Manmadha Rao, Chief Transplantation Officer, confirmed that Jeevandan employs a transparent digital system for allocating organs. This process considers factors such as the registration date, the severity of the patient’s condition, and tissue compatibility. The system is designed to eliminate opportunities for influence or intermediaries, ensuring fair and equitable distribution of available organs. The increase in organ donations has placed Andhra Pradesh in the sixth position nationally for brain-dead donor contributions. This ranking reflects the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to promote awareness and facilitate the donation process. Despite the progress, the gap between the number of patients in need and the availability of organs remains significant, underscoring the urgency of continuing public education and policy initiatives. The state government continues to explore ways to enhance its organ donation infrastructure, including expanding hospital networks and improving public engagement strategies. With the upcoming National Organ Donation Day, officials are hopeful that increased participation from families could lead to more donations and ultimately save more lives.
