Maribor's mayor, Sasha Arsenovič, has proposed the name "Prehod Erike Vouk" for a new pedestrian crossing near Rotovški trg, close to the newly built central library. The suggestion was made following a call for consultation published on the city’s website, inviting public input on the proposed renaming of the crossing. The consultation period ran until August 11, during which individuals and legal entities could submit written opinions, proposals, or comments via postal mail or email. The proposed name honors Erika Vouk, one of Slovenia’s most distinguished poets. She is the second Slovenian poet, after Svetlana Makarovič, to receive the Prešeren Award (2024), and she has been awarded all major Slovenian poetry prizes, including Jenkov, Veronikin, Vitezinje poetry awards, and the Glazer Prize for lifetime achievement. According to the explanation accompanying the call for consultation, Vouk is the author of ten outstanding poetry collections and a recognized translator of Goethe’s Faust, one of the foundational works of European literature, as well as other dramatic works such as those by Wedekind and Müller. Her poetic work has been extensively discussed by poet and professor Boris A. Novak, who noted that her poetry speaks through masterfully controlled and aristocratically cultivated language. Born and raised in Maribor, Vouk lived there throughout her life until her death in June this year. From 1981 until her retirement, she worked at the Maribor Library Rotovž. There can be no doubt that this great artist deserves recognition from Maribor, renaming the pedestrian crossing near the library where she spent decades working seems especially fitting, the statement added. The proposal comes as part of broader efforts to enhance the cultural identity of the city center.
