WWII pilot missing after secret spy mission finally accounted for more than 80 years later

U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Franklin H. McKinney, a World War II pilot who went missing during a reconnaissance mission in 1944, has been officially accounted for over 80 years later. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) confirmed his identification through forensic analysis of remains recovered from a crash site in Thailand. McKinney, part of the 35th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, was last seen departing Yunnanyi, China, on November 5, 1944, while conducting a mission to gather intelligence on Japanese forces. Despite extensive searches after his disappearance, his remains were not found until recent efforts led to the discovery of an aircraft wreckage in a rice paddy in Lampang Province, Thailand. Third-party researchers identified the site in 2018, and subsequent investigations by DPAA teams in 2019 and 2021 culminated in the recovery of potential human remains, which were analyzed and matched to McKinney. His family will be informed of the results, and his name will be added to the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
