Residents of Slovenske Konjice have long been troubled by the mining operations under Konjiška Gora, which have caused ground tremors, wall and facade damage, damaged roads, dust, and noise throughout the day. These issues led to the formation of a citizens' initiative demanding the closure of the mine. The group has collected signatures over the years and submitted a complaint to the Inspectorate for Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia against the company Kongrad, which holds a concession for mineral extraction. The complaint alleges property damage and illegal mineral exploitation. Analysis provided by the initiative suggests that significantly more material has been extracted than officially reported. The case was also forwarded to the Specialized State Prosecutor’s Office, which referred it to the district prosecutor’s office in Celje. Kongrad’s concession expired in December of the previous year, but despite this, local residents and the initiative continued to report ongoing mining activities.
