V Dutovljah se začenja Gin & Brin festival

The Gin & Brin Festival has begun in Dutovlje, featuring seven distillers participating today and nine on Saturday, including one producer of brinjevec (a type of spirit made from brin berries). The event aims to promote the culture of gin consumption, educate visitors about its history and the tradition of brinjevec production, and showcase high-quality craft spirits from both Slovenian and international producers. This year, the festival introduced additional activities for children due to the increasing number of families attending. Distillation of spirits like gin and brinjevec is primarily pursued by enthusiasts and some farmers as a supplementary activity. While brin berries are still available on the Kras peninsula, they remain insufficient for local producers, who often need to import them. Harvesting brin berries is described as difficult and labor-intensive. As part of the festival, organizers conducted a tasting and evaluation of 37 samples of gin and brinjevec, with five being brinjevec samples. All entries were of high quality, and four received gold medals while many earned silver awards. Both small and large distilleries participated, with some internationally known.
