A senior scientist from India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) called for closer collaboration between universities, hospitals, and industries to address long-term challenges in the healthcare sector during an international conference held at VIT University on Wednesday. Raj Shekhar Singh, Director of the Technology Division at DRDO, emphasized the need for interdisciplinary efforts involving life scientists, chemists, and artificial intelligence experts to drive innovation in medical research and treatment. The conference, titled BioMed, focused on topics such as biomaterials, bioengineering, and biotheranostics. It was organized by the School of Bio Sciences and Technology at VIT University and brought together over 480 participants from 16 different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, South Korea, and Israel. The event spanned three days and featured presentations and discussions on cutting-edge developments in biotechnology and related fields. During his keynote speech, Singh highlighted how artificial intelligence is playing a transformative role in disease detection and treatment. He noted that AI-driven diagnostics and biotherapeutics are reshaping traditional approaches to healthcare. According to Singh, the integration of AI with biological sciences is opening new avenues for personalized medicine and more effective therapeutic strategies. Singh also encouraged young researchers and students to pursue their ideas fearlessly, emphasizing that scientific breakthroughs often arise from bold questioning and experimentation. He pointed out that even failed experiments provide valuable insights that contribute to eventual success. In his view, ethical considerations must accompany technological advancements to build public trust, while inclusive innovation can lead to broader societal transformation. Deepak Selvaraj, Associate Director of Christian Medical College (CMC), Abhay Pandit, Director of the Centre for Medical Devices at the University of Galway in Ireland, and Sekar Viswanathan, Vice President of VIT University. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and its potential to foster global partnerships in biomedical research. The conference aimed to create a platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative problem-solving among professionals from diverse backgrounds.
